We’re Still Heading North

We stopped at Bodø and walked through this small town’s large shopping area. There were fishermen selling dried or smoked cod at every town. Finnsnes was our next stop, and we watched this car disembark before heading under this high bridge (one of many we passed under).

We heard about the Tromso Cathedral, which has midnight concerts, and decided to see if we could find it. I was expecting a grand stone cathedral, but I guess when you’re north of the Arctic Circle you don’t need all that. It was built in 1861 using timber logs and a slate roof. The first church here was built in the 1200s and this cathedral was built because there was a need for a larger and more solid cathedral.
Tromsø was a very pretty little town, and we happened to be there the weekend they were having some kind of celebration with a pedestrian area through the middle of town. They had vendors selling things we thought were very interesting, and they even gave samples. I’m holding a leg of smoked lamb which they shave thin slices off and it’s very delicious! Of course we have more salmon for sale, and if you can’t read Norwegian just look at the pictures! I guess we’re not that far north, look at that sign - it’s a Hard Rock Cafe!!
When we got back on the ship and left Tromsø we passed this Cathedral, the Arctic Cathedral. We didn’t walk to this new, grand church. Remember, Bob has a leg problem. We saw this sign and I think it’s supposed to make dog sledding look exciting, but that huskie looks scary! I just couldn’t resist posting this third picture. What do you think it is? It was served as a breakfast choice and I gave it a try. Do you think you would like poached eggs with salmon roe? Nope, not for me! I like caviar but salmon roe is VERY fishy tasting!
Next stop: reindeer, we hope!
