Let’s go out West and let the car drive us!

Bob and I were talking about our trip this year and we agreed that another trip across our beautiful country would be fun. We have a Tesla with Full Self Drive, and if we did it this way, Bob could enjoy the ride without worrying about traffic, navigation, etc.
After much discussion Bob said he would plan the trip this time. He said we’d go to Banff National Park, Glacier National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park and hit a few stops along the way ending in Illinois and a visit with our friends Jess and Doris.
He also suggested tent camping, and I was ok with it because I love sleeping in our little backpacking tent. I imagined us sleeping under the stars on a clear night and gazing at the Milky Way while hoping to see a falling star.

So, here’s Bob in our tent. He’s a happy camper with his laptop, a luxury he didn’t have when we went backpacking. We even had cots and chairs! Wow!
Our first stop was Mackinac Island. The cute little town is filled with huge hotels, fudge shops, tee shirt shops and places to rent bicycles. No motor vehicles are allowed so horses are used instead. Fort Mackinac is on the hill, guarding the town.
We rented bicycles to ride the Around the Shore Trail, the only state highway where automobiles are banned. It’s a mostly flat 8.2 mile trail and it was a fun ride. The top right picture reminded me of Jordon Pond House at Bar Harbor, and when I passed near the shore I told myself how much I love the Maine Coast! We stopped to see Arch Rock and climbed the 207 steps. They have one of the first steps labeled so you know that you’re going to climb!
Mackinac Island was definitely a beautiful place to visit, but it’s time to move on and we heard that the Soo Locks, which connect Lake Superior to Lake Huron are just north. So, away we go!
