We watch The Sound of Music every year and admire the scenery, so Salzburg was definitely on our itinerary. Trains in Europe are a very easy way to travel, and we enjoyed the trains in Austria as much as we enjoyed them in Switzerland. Other than sitting next to a drunk Serbian guy who told us to go home when he found out that we were Americans, it was a fun trip.

Our hotel was in the New Town section of Salzburg, but it was still very, very old. We could walk to Old Town which was just across the river.

Every city has their bridge with locks, but look at this view! It was a short walk across one of Salzburg’s bridges to get to Old Town where there was so much to see and do.

The three photo above are Residenzplatz, Salzburg’s government center with Salzburg Cathedral in the middle.

We remembered this bell tower from The Sound of Music! The top is an upside down heart in flames surrounding the solar system, representing how God loves all of creation. Beautiful! The Carillon has 35 bells.

High above the town looms Hohensalzburg Fortress. The views from up there are so beautiful.

You can tour the fortress but it looks like somebody didn’t listen. I told him not to go into that room!

Every direction had beautiful views from atop the fortress.

See those hills way out there? I can hear them singing, they’re alive with the sound of music!

How could we go all the way to Salzburg and not go on the famous Sound of Music tour which was a fun time for sure. We saw many of the sites that we remembered from The Sound of Music and learned which scenes were filmed in Hollywood!

The home used as the Von Trapp home in the movie is now a hotel and the closest we could get to it was across the river. Remember when Maria and the kids fell out of their canoe when they saw Father?

The gazebo that Rolf and Liesl danced in is much larger than this one, and it’s in Hollywood.

Yes! It’s the church where they got married! No, it’s not in Salzburg either. It’s in the small town of Mondsee and the people in Mondsee are very proud of their church and their connection to the movie. I’d say that they like the money it brings into the town.

The church is actually disguised to look much larger in the movie. Maria wanted to get married in a grand church, not a small one, so Hollywood made the church grow!

Maria and the children danced around this statue and up the steps when she taught them to sing. This is actually in Salzburg!

After our tour we found a small restaurant in Salzburg where I ordered a pigs knuckle. It was fried, and I don’t usually eat fried food, but the knuckle and the huge pretzel were delicious. Bob ordered a pigs knuckle in Vienna and it was baked. Better for you, but mine tasted better.
These pictures were just a few of the ones I took in Salzburg. It’s so picturesque, and we had a grand time walking around the city. Next up: Bled, Slovenia
